Friends and Neighbours,

Another growing season is fast approaching for the Sustainable South Osborne Community Cooperative (SSOCC) and we are excited to tell you about who we are.

In 2009, dedicated community members wanted to transform barren land into a space of abundance, food security, and learning. Years of hard work later, SSOCC has four locations throughout South Osborne, including our orchard along Churchill Drive behind the Riverview Health Centre.  We meet throughout the growing season to tend to our gardens and grow everything from tomatoes, and cucumbers to apples, and haskap berries!  Each year we produce and harvest thousands of pounds of food to share with our volunteers, the community as well as donate to local organizations in need.

Did you start a garden in 2020 or expand your garden and were unsure how to tend your plants? Or would you love to garden but you don’t have the space? We can help! We invite people with all levels of experience to volunteer their time and help us tend to the gardens with the guidance of garden stewards. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn, share, meet like minded residents and build a strong sustainable community.

During these times of uncertainty, local food resilience has never been more salient.

We are a non-profit organization and like so many other organizations, have had challenges this past year raising funds to assist with our operational and capital costs, such as purchasing seeds, seedlings, trees, and tools.

If you are not able to volunteer your time, there are other ways to show your support.  Please follow us on Instagram/Facebook to hear about our upcoming fundraising events, or to enquire on how to provide a donation.

Each growing season provides new opportunities for growth and learning. Stay tuned for some exciting SSOCC events this year.  We appreciate your support for this important neighbourhood organization! From everyone here at SSOCC, we will see you in the gardens.

If you’d like to learn more about our organization or become a volunteer please visit our website at www.sustainablesouthosborne.ca, visit us on Facebook or Instagram or join us at our upcoming virtual AGM on April 5th at 7pm.
